What is Involved in Oral Conscious Sedation?
To plan the best treatment for you, we will ask for your current medical conditions as well as any treatments or medications you are using. We will also ask about medical allergies.
You may be asked not to eat or drink anything for 12 hours before your appointment. Then, about an hour before your appointment, you will take an oral medication. Because the medication will make you groggy or sleepy, you will need a family-member or friend to bring you to your appointment.
Once you are seated, we will check your sedation level and adjust any medication as necessary. Your pulse, blood pressure and oxygen levels will be monitored constantly during the procedure as well.
Sedation dentistry is often mistakenly thought to induce sleep. You will be very comfortable and relaxed, but in fact most sedatives allow you to stay awake during the procedure. Sleepiness can be a side effect of some medications, but nitrous oxide, oral conscious sedation and IV sedation only work to calm anxiety throughout the dental visit, thus you will be able to respond to touch and to our requests.
After the treatment, you will have your family-member or friend take you home where you can relax the rest of the day and allow the medication to wear off.
If you struggle with strong fear or anxiety, oral conscious sedation is a good choice for anxiety-free dentistry.
